ATHENS, Ohio — Athens city officials are weighing new flood-mitigation measures for two of the city’s hardest-hit corridors after Ohio University environmental studies director Dr. Natalie Kruse Daniels presented potential solutions to the Transportation Committee.

Kruse Daniels focused her recommendations on Richland Avenue and Coates Run, areas where city officials say repeated flooding has caused significant disruption. Her presentation came during the committee’s Sept. 28 meeting, the latest step in a long-running effort to address stormwater problems across the city.

Flooding along Coates Run and Richland Avenue has been a recurring concern for residents and local leaders, with heavy rains overwhelming existing drainage and closing roadways. The committee is expected to weigh the proposals alongside other infrastructure priorities in the weeks ahead.

Athens sits in the Hocking River watershed, where flash flooding is a familiar threat each storm season. City officials say any new plan would need to balance engineering costs with the needs of the neighborhoods that flood most often.
