DAYTON, Ohio — The Dunbar High School football team is about to do something most programs never attempt: play varsity football games on back-to-back days.
The Wolverines host Cincinnati Northwest on Thursday, Oct. 8, then turn around and play Dayton’s Stivers School for the Arts on Friday, Oct. 9 — three games in a seven-day span. Athletic director Deondra Wynn confirmed the unusual schedule to the Dayton Daily News.
The double duty is a makeup. The original Stivers matchup, scheduled for Aug. 28, was canceled when Dayton Public School officials canceled Stivers’ season; days later the district restarted the season, forcing Dunbar to squeeze the makeup into a single week.
There is no OHSAA rule barring consecutive-day games. Regulation 1.31 caps players at four quarters in a single day, and a practice regulation merely advises limiting full contact on consecutive days. USA Today reported the OHSAA had been asked for comment on the schedule.
Dunbar enters the stretch 3-3 overall but 2-0 in Dayton City League play, leading the standings after a 52-6 loss to Trotwood-Madison on Oct. 2. After Friday’s game, the Wolverines get eight days off before an Oct. 17 matchup with Thurgood Marshall.
