NELSONVILLE — Nelsonville just went full cryptid. The southeast Ohio city held its first-ever Bigfoot Festival over the weekend, drawing locals and visitors to celebrate the legend of Sasquatch and other cryptid creatures with a full day of vendors, food and live music.
Attendees browsed vendor booths, grabbed festival food and took in performances as the small Athens County city leaned into its folklore. Organizers billed the event as a celebration of the unknown, and crowds came ready to hunt for evidence of the hairy biped — or at least a good time.
The festival adds Nelsonville to a growing map of Ohio towns turning local legends into community events. With the region’s deep woods and folklore-heavy history, organizers said the setting fits a Bigfoot gathering.
City officials and downtown businesses welcomed the foot traffic. Festivals like this one are a known draw in southeast Ohio, where small towns regularly turn quirky themes into weekend tourism dollars.
Whether the next edition is already in the works remains to be seen, but Nelsonville’s first Bigfoot Festival proved the legend has legs — in a town willing to follow them.
