Ohio University has introduced a new official “OU” mark for fan merchandise, embracing a nickname generations of Bobcats have used for decades. The university announced the mark as part of its move to a one-logo system built around the arched OHIO design, saying the new OU matches that design style while celebrating the familiar moniker.

The mark is reserved exclusively for merchandise, fan engagement and special brand projects; the arched OHIO remains the primary logo for academics and athletics. University officials partnered with Court Street retailers College Book Store and Ohio is Home to launch the mark in Athens, with new OU merchandise hitting shelves Monday, Oct. 5, as Homecoming Week begins.

Exclusive OU products will also be available at Peden Stadium during OHIO football games and at Jefferson Marketplace and the Bobcat Depot on campus. The design was created by Ohio University alumnus Aaron Harden, the university’s senior director of creative and brand, after focus groups of alumni working in advertising, marketing and branding weighed in on several options.

According to the university, this is the first time Ohio University has formally used an OU mark since 1940. Vice President for University Communications and Marketing Robin Oliver said the university wants to recognize stakeholders who know and love the school as “OU.” Homecoming Week runs Oct. 5-10, culminating in Saturday’s parade and football game against Central Michigan at Peden Stadium.
